The Challenges Ahead: Why W2D2 Must Exist
In 2024 alone, several non-profit organizations closed their doors or had to significantly ramp down operations due to funding. These organizations were pillars of support, mentoring thousands, providing invaluable resources, and creating networks of connection and camaraderie. However, despite their significant impact, they faced insurmountable financial challenges, ultimately leading to their closure.
This unfortunate reality highlights a broader issue: the struggle to secure the necessary funding to sustain initiatives focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech industry. The loss of these organizations is not just a setback for the communities they served, but also a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our mission to drive meaningful change.
These closures make the mission of Women Who Do Data (W2D2) more critical than ever. The need for a space where women and underrepresented groups can thrive, connect, and lead in the data and AI/ML fields has not diminished — if anything, it has become more urgent.
